This Oscar-winning, CinemaScope adaptation of Jules Verne’s underwater adventure returns to the big screen in honor of the passing of Kirk Douglas.
This film was a critical and commercial success, being especially remembered for the fight with a giant squid, and James Mason’s performance as the charismatic anti-hero Captain Nemo. It won two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects. Kirk Douglas plays a trouble-shooting 19th century seaman, trying to discover why so many whaling ships have been disappearing of late.
